LUMSON UNVEILS ITS FIRST SUSTAINABILITY REPORT
Lumson is committed to sustainable innovation which is at the core of its corporate strategy, emphasizing an integrated approach and collaborations with reputable organizations and partners.
Lumson, a leading Italian primary cosmetic packaging company, recently presented its inaugural Sustainability Report which was developed in collaboration with the consulting firm KPMG and the result of over a year of work. It marks a significant milestone in the company's journey towards sustainability, showcasing its dedication to environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) principles. Lumson recognizes the need for businesses to adopt sustainable practices and minimize their environmental impact. The report highlights the progress made thus far in working towards ESG goals and presents data for 2022, a crucial period for the Group both in terms of performance and milestones achieved.
The 2022 Sustainability Report highlights Lumson's vision of 'sustainable innovation', featuring an integrated and collaborative approach that involves all stakeholders (customers, suppliers, communities, employees, shareholders, industry associations) and the company's mission: to pursue a policy of research and innovation and forge international partnerships to accomplish common goals. This commitment is reinforced with the publication of the Sustainability Report, through which Lumson aims not only to showcase its dedication to transparency and responsibility but also to drive positive change and contribute to a more sustainable future.
LUMSON'S CORNERSTONES: INNOVATION, CREATIVITY, AND SUSTAINABILITY
Creativity, technology, and innovation have been deeply ingrained values at Lumson since 1975 and the introduction of a new entrepreneurial model in the packaging industry based on direct and internal control of all processes. Blending technical and technological expertise with values such as uncompromised quality and respect for work, Lumson has successfully responded to a market that is continually evolving.
A pioneer in dispensing and airless system manufacturing, the company has increasingly prioritized sustainable innovation with a global outlook. Already an institutional partner of the Politecnico di Milano Foundation, in 2021 Lumson joined SPICE (Sustainable Packaging Initiative for CosmEtics) and developed its LCA tool for conducting environmental impact assessments. In 2022, Lumson became a 'platinum member' of Recyclass, a non-profit organization helping the transition to a circular future for plastics. The numbers are a testament to the company’s dedication: over 800 tons of recycled waste, nearly 600 tons of recycled material used, and more than 300 kWh of solar-generated energy produced onsite.
"We take pride in presenting the first Sustainability Report, a testament to our commitment to the three ESG principles," stated President Matteo Moretti. "Competence, reliability, knowledge of standards, regulations, and technologies are key principles of our philosophy. We recognize the importance of conducting business responsibly and strive for our operations to create a virtuous cycle with a positive impact on the community and the environment. Our focus is on the circular economy and our business revolves around the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Our sustainability efforts primarily aim to offer innovative products that meet market demand and using our experience to support customers in developing sustainable solutions.”
GOALS ACHIEVED AND NEW CHALLENGES
Recognizing its potential to shape the industry's future through its actions, Lumson has set itself new, important challenges for the coming years: to become a more responsible company and a leading player in sustainable packaging development. The report highlights the importance of partnerships and collaborations with universities, research centers, and international organizations to work towards common goals together.
"For the future, we are firmly committed to reinforcing and strengthening Lumson's sustainability commitments. We’ll face challenges by setting new, well thought out objectives proportionate to the company's resources and market conditions," continued Moretti. "In the coming years, our efforts will focus on creating more integrated and structured governance as per ESG and consolidating partnerships with reputable entities, such as the Politecnico di Milano Foundation, and joining international platforms like SPICE and Recyclass."
Lumson's innovation process is geared towards developing sustainable solutions to meet market needs and evolution, always mindful of the fact that adhering to standards and regulations is crucial to recognizing the company as a leading supplier by industry leaders. Tangible evidence of the Group's efforts in the spirit of circularity can be seen in some of its packaging developed in recent years: XPaper, the paper-based airless system listed in the ADI Design Index and recipient of various awards, App-Light, the airless container made from 80% post-consumer recycled plastic, a version of TAL made from recycled post-consumer aluminum, and finally Re-Place, the refillable jar.
