Design that Makes a Difference: Aesthetic, Innovation, and Sustainability in Packaging by Lumson
In an era when beauty brands are increasingly asking themselves how to combine luxury, sophistication, sustainability, and safety- and as the role of packaging evolves beyond function and aesthetics to include visual allure, scent, and even sound as key tools to engage consumers, especially younger generations- Lumson stands out. As a leading Italian company in primary cosmetic packaging, it excels at blending these elements together while staying true to the principles of circularity.
It’s an ever more important challenge if we consider the growing impact of the packaging industry: Coherent Market Insights reports that the global packaging market, valued at $58.91 billion in 2024, is projected to reach $80.17 billion by 2031, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5% from 2024 to 2031.
BEHIND THE SCENES: PACKAGING MADE BY LUMSON
At Lumson, form and function work in synergy and visual beauty is perfectly integrated with technical performance. This is why the company has chosen to manage the entire process internally, from the development of the majority of components to the most delicate phases of assembling complex systems such as airless and dispensers, as well as all the decoration processes.
Decoration is an essential phase, where design comes to life through advanced techniques. From internal and external lacquering to 3D effects, from semi-transparent gradients to customized coloring, decoration is not seen as mere finishes, but as narrative and sensory elements that transform packaging into a powerful means of communication with its own identity and storytelling, able to create an emotional and sensory experience.
Examples of Lumson’s Italian “savoir-faire” include the Unique, Japa, Fuji, and the new Glow collections.
UNIQUE COLLECTION
Now presented in a fully revamped version, this collection, consisting of six bottles and one jar, is the result of careful design research and a deep exploration of color. Clean lines and delicate curves create a soft, flowing silhouette, while the thick, rounded base and subtle gradient finish enhance its distinctive shape and emphasize its profile. The concrete blue gradient- an intense, multifaceted blue- creates dancing shadows as light passes through, giving the collection a timeless touch, as unique as its name.
JAPA
Originally made up of only jars, including two refillable versions, the Japa line is set to be expanded in 2025 with a new 30mL bottle with a modern, on-trend design that is in high demand from the market and perfect for both skincare and makeup products. The collection’s updated version brings new personality and timeless elegance to the line. Distinctive elements include: transparency, allowing a clear view of the product inside; a clean, minimalist design with a solid base that adds a distinct character to the shape, and a delicate shade of green that evokes the fluidity of water.
FUJI
The new collection, featuring a 30mL bottle and a 50mL jar (also available in a refillable version), blends nature-inspired beauty with refined design. Its elegant silhouette brings to mind the iconic shape of Mount Fuji, from which it takes its name. An intense, deep green recalls the peacefulness and tranquility of woods and forests and the bright hue of jade. The glass’s transparency together with an interplay of light emphasizes the depth and details of its shape, for a sophisticated, immersive result.
GLOW
Glow is a new 30mL bottle that enriches the Italian company’s ample portfolio of glass packaging for makeup and skincare. With its sculptural design, softened corners, and thick, diamond-shaped base, it strikes the perfect balance between modernity and elegance. Its refined surfaces catch and reflect the light, accentuating the bottle’s contours and emphasizing its depth.
